De la Investigacion Operativa a la Informatica

Resumo

El Centro de Cómputos de la Universidad Católica Argentina albergó la primera IBM 1620 y fue el segundo centro académico en poseer una computadora en el país. La incorporación de la IBM 1620 en la UCA fue parte del proyecto global que llevaron adelante el matemático Agustín Durañona y Vedia y su grupo de colaboradores. En esta perspectiva se pone en evidencia la existencia de una red de profesionales e instituciones, que, inicialmente, promovían la “buena nueva” de la Investigación Operativa y que se orientó luego hacia la Informática. En contraste con la tradición encarnada en Manuel Sadosky y la experiencia del Instituto de Cálculo de la Universidad de Buenos Aires entre 1961 y 1966, la red constituida alrededor de la figura de Durañona estaba ligada a los “factores de poder” (Iglesia Católica, Fuerzas Armadas y élites empresariales) y se convirtió, desde fines de la década de 1960, en el “mainstream” de la Informática en Argentina. El objetivo central de este trabajo es reconstruir, con base documental, el proceso de surgimiento de esta tradición dentro del campo de la informática en Argentina. Abstract — The Computer Center of the Catholic University of Argentina hosted the first IBM 1620 and was the second academic center in this country having a computer. The incorporation of the IBM 1620 in the UCA was part of the overall project that carried out the mathematician Agustín Vedia Durañona and his staff. This perspective reveals the existence of a network of professionals and the institutions which, initially, promoted the "Good News" of Operations Research and, later, how they were going aimed at “Informatics” (or “System Engineering”). In contrast to the tradition embodied in Sadosky and the experience of the Institute of Computation at University of Buenos Aires between 1961 and 1966, the network set up around the figure of Durañona was linked to the "power factors" (Catholic Church, Armed Forces and Corporate elites) and became, since the late 1960s, in the "mainstream" of Computing in Argentina. The main objective of this work is to reconstruct, with evidential base, the process of emergence of this tradition in the field of information technology in Argentina.
